Jim and Pat Mortimer
01 May 2013
We are extremely saddened to report that IER Honorary Life President and founding member Jim Mortimer has passed away at the age of 92.
As a leading figure in left-wing politics and trade unionism, Jim was deeply involved in the inauguration of the Institute of Employment Rights in 1989 and stood as an Executive Committee Member and later Vice-President for the organisation until 2009, when he was made Honorary Life President.
He was also the first Chair of the ACAS conciliation service in 1974 and later became General Secretary of the Labour Party.
Jim authored The Trade Disputes Act 1906 for the IER in 2005, which originated as a lecture in December 2004.
IER Director Carolyn Jones said:
“He was an inspiration to us all, bringing understanding, knowledge, experience and progressive thinking to our meetings. He was a thoroughly nice man and will be dearly missed but forever remembered.”
More to follow in memory of Jim.
